Read Word 2007 files with Docx Converter
Web site Docx Converter extracts the text from Word 2007 files (.docx) so you can quickly get to the contents if you don't have Office 2007 (or you don't have a previous version of Office with the Office 2007 Compatibility Pack for Windows installed).
Let's say, for example, you're on a Mac and you can't open the new .docx filetype (the default Word filetype in Microsoft's new "Open XML" format). Just toss the file in the Docx Converter and at least you can get to the text (unformatted as it may be). It's not as good as, say, being able to actually open and edit the file, but it's better than nothing. If you're not comfortable with using an online tool to extract the text from your document, you can extract the text manually with a little virtual elbow grease.

Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack
The Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats (whew!) will let you open, edit, and save the new default file formats created by Office 2007 programs (called Office Open XML, or OOXML) on your clunky old pre-2007 Office apps.
With the release of Vista just around the corner and Office 2007 hot on its heels, you can bet you'll be seeing a lot more .docx (Microsoft Word's new default filetype) and other OOXML files floating around. If you want to actually be able to read those files on your pre-2007 software, the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack will take care of you. The pack is freeware, Windows only.
